Sicily is most known for the Sicilian Mafia, the great food and the hot weather. Guess what? There is much more to Sicily than what’s shown in the Godfather! And Secret Sicily is here to tell you about those hidden places and stories you didn’t know about.
I’ve recently discovered an amazing documentary project called Sicilian Characters, the brain child of a group of young people from Palermo. These mini-documentaries tell the stories of every-day heroes who have followed their dreams and achieved something special. After watching these, you’ll rethink your idea of Sicily and Sicilian people!
Here are the first two episodes of the series. Stay tuned for more!
Pamela Conti – The queen of football
I personally hate the expression ‘a woman with balls’, but nothing could be more appropriate when referring to Pamela. She was born in Ballarò, an historical neighbourhood in the heart of Palermo, and she left the Island when she was very young to follow her passion, football. Life outside of her little Palermitan cocoon was tough, but her talent, hard work and positive attitude brought her to the Serie A and the Italian national football team. She has won 2 Italian Leagues, 4 Italian Cups, one Spanish Cup and one Russian League, and she has played two European Championships. Not bad, huh?
Pamela’s story inspired me – as a Sicilian and as a woman – but I’m sure you’ll find her inspirational despite your origins and gender. Just watch and see.
Giulio Gelardi – The king of ash trees
Giulio is a farmer, and a charming philosopher. He too left Sicily when he was young, but the ‘Land’ called him back once he had rediscovered his passion for nature. He decided to take on the ancient family tradition of manna production, and is now sharing his workload with the animals living in his farm. His inspirational stories, myths and reflections about living in harmony with nature will make you want to pack your stuff and leave the city forever.
